Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 21, 2005) - The John Brown Golden Eagles suffered disappointment against a tough field in the Drury University Pizza Hut Classic in Springfield, Mo., this weekend. Drury beat John Brown 74-65 Friday night, and College of the Ozarks (Mo.) defeated the Golden Eagles 93-90 in overtime on Saturday.
The NCAA Division II Drury Panthers led John Brown by as much as 17 in the first half before settling into a 39-29 halftime lead. John Brown’s Brandon Cole hit two 3-pointers in the last minute of the half to trim the deficit. He finished with 20 points and 6 treys on the evening.
John Brown opened the second half with an 8-2 run and eventually tied the game 46-46 at the 14:29 mark on a jumper by senior point guard Alex Terry. Adam Workman gave the Golden Eagles a 49-48 lead with a 3-pointer at the 13:25 mark, but Drury’s Collins Harris took it back with a layup sixteen seconds later. The Golden Eagles and the Panthers traded the lead again before Drury regained it for good on a 3-pointer by Tim Brown with 8:44 to play. The Panthers successfully held off Golden Eagle rallies and held the visitors scoreless in the final 1:36 to secure the win.
Workman scored 20 points for John Brown, and Terry added 9. Brandon Kimbrough led the Drury (1-0) with 19, followed by Matt Stell with 15 and Harris with 13. Brown and Steven Gum also finished in double figures with 12 and 10, respectively.
Saturday’s game against College of the Ozarks looked much more promising for John Brown in the first three minutes as the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 13-1 lead. The Golden Eagles posted their largest lead 36-21 with 7:14 left in the first half, but the Bobcats cut that to 48-38 by halftime.
College of the Ozarks wasted no time in the second half, launching a 21-10 over the first nine minutes. Back-to-back treys by Heath Sitton brought the Bobcats to within one, 59-58. College of the Ozarks took a 64-62 lead at the 9:30 mark, but it would continue to shift throughout the half. John Brown’s Cody Page scored a layup with 0:01 on the clock to force overtime. Page then gave the Golden Eagles another trey and a brief 87-86 lead in the extra period, but the Bobcats’ Tony Irons responded in kind after a timeout. Page again hit a 3-pointer to make the score 91-90 with 0:14 left, but Andrew Boyce finished the game with a layup at 0:02 to set the final margin at 93-90.
Page scored 19 points and hit five treys for John Brown (3-3). Senior Brandon Cole led the Golden Eagles with 27 points and six treys. Alex Terry contributed 11 points and 8 assists, and Jake Anderson scored 10 for the Golden Eagles. Boyce and Sitton led College of the Ozarks (4-2) with 26 and 22 points, respectively, and Michael Bonaparte and Chris Pullen each scored 16.
John Brown visits NCAA Division I Arkansas-Little Rock next Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 7:00.
