Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 16, 2005) — The John Brown University speech and debate team continued its success this past weekend (Nov.12-13) at Louisiana State University, Shreveport (LSUS).

The team took first overall at the LSUS Red River Classic, edging out 27 other schools from Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas.

“This was a huge win for our team,” Jason Hough, speech and debate coach said. “The overall win depends on points from debate and speaking events. It truly took an entire team effort.”

Leading the squad was freshman Brad Webber. Webber took second in Public Debate, sixth in Extemporaneous Speaking, and was a semi-finalist in Impromptu Speaking.

Other team leaders included sophomore James Kuykendall, fourth place in Extemporaneous Speaking; sophomore Nicole Ediger, sixth place in Impromptu Speaking; freshman Jasmine Banks, sixth place in Poetry Interpretation and junior Zach Fuller, seventh place Impromptu Speaking.

Contributing debate points to the overall team win in the team Parliamentary Debate were freshman Austin Benedict, freshman Matt Mellema, freshman Josh Sooter, Banks, sophomore Aaron Brenner, Ediger, sophomore Rebecca Holland, Kuykendall, Fuller, junior Austin Teed, senior Felicia Parmain, and senior Jessica Hunsberger.

Contributing debate points to the overall team win in individual Public Debate were freshman Rebecca Clendenen, freshman Jon Erickson, sophomore Ben Ghrist, junior Wyatt Bury, senior Don David Turner, and adjunct instructor Jason Edgar.

Contributing individual event points to the overall team win were: Benedict and Kuykendall in Duo Interpretation, Clendenen in Poetry, freshman Eva Petersen in Poetry, Ghrist in Prose Interpretation, Teed in Dramatic Interpretation, Hunsberger in Poetry and Program of Oral Interpretation, and Parmain in Poetry and Dramatic Interpretation.

The team’s next regional tournament is at the Cameron Christmas Classic in Lawton, Okla., Dec. 2-4.
