Golden Eagles Drop Close Game to Lyon
Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 7, 2005) — The 8th-ranked John Brown Golden Eagles lost 68-65on the road Monday night to 25th-ranked Lyon (Ark.). Freshman Cody Page scored 17 points and 5 three-pointers in the first half to spur the Golden Eagles to a 34-31 halftime lead after they trailed 8-0 early. The Golden Eagles trailed the Scots 10-2 with 15:17 remaining in the first half when Page went on a rampage, hitting three treys in less than two minutes to bring his team within three. Lyon, however, managed to fend off the John Brown surge for several more minutes. Page tied the game twice, once of free throws and once on a trey, before finally giving the Golden Eagles a 27-26 lead at the 2:55 mark. Adam Workman hit a crucial trey with 17 seconds remaining in the half to give John Brown a 34-29 lead. Workman finished in double figures with 10 points. Page ended up with 18. Free throws were critical in the opening frame as the Golden Eagles made all six of their attempts.
The night belonged, however, to Lyon’s Jonathan Donaldson and his 26 points. John Brown led by as many as seven in the second half, but a Donaldson trey with 4:50 remaining gave the Scots a 56-55 lead. Workman responded with another three-pointer at the 3:34 mark to tie the game 58-58. Then John Brown senior Brandon Cole snapped out of a game-long shooting slump and nailed a trey just in time to tie the game again at 62-62 with 1:57 left. But another Donaldson basket and a free throw by Norris Weintz undid that accomplishment. Alex Terry hit a trey for John Brown with five seconds remaining, but Weintz added two more free throws on the ensuing possession. Terry finished the game with 12 points.
Lyon out-shot John Brown 47% to 41.5 % and won the rebounding battle 39-27. The Golden Eagles’ ten treys bring them to 21 total in their first two games.
John Brown (1-1) hosts Park (Mo.) on Thursday night at 7:00.
