Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 26, 2005) - The John Brown Golden Eagles went 5-0 in the Region VI Challenge this weekend in Plainview and Lubbock, Tex. They improved their season record to 13-4, and opened their Sooner Athletic Conference season 2-0 after wins over Wayland Baptist (Tex.) and Lubbock Christian.
In John Brown’s first match, the Golden Eagles overcame a two-game deficit to defeat Wayland Baptist 3-2. They then ousted Texas-Permian Basin 3-1 in four close games. The match against Lubbock Christian was tight, too, but the Golden Eagles came away with a 3-1 win there as well. Their easiest test was a 3-0 sweep of College of the Southwest, but that was followed by a rematch against 8th-ranked Houston Baptist, which had defeated John Brown in August. The Golden Eagles found themselves down 2-0 after losing the first two games 27-30 and 27-30, but they made a furious comeback, winning the final three games 32-30, 30-15, and 15-10.
For the tournament, Tati Silva averaged 16.8 kills per match with 21.8 digs per match and a serve receive percentage of 93%. Christine Wells averaged 30.8 digs per match and had a serve receive percentage of 95%. Juliana Todescan contributed an average of 48.4 assists per game to go along with six kills, three blocks, and 15.2 digs per match. Elisa Mendieta averaged almost five blocks per match with 24, and Sam Rogoff also averaged three blocks per match.
The Golden Eagles play Bacone Tuesday night at 7:00 in Muskogee, Okla.
