Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 6, 2005) - They didn’t dominate until the fifth game, but the John Brown Golden Eagles seized the momentum late and defeated NCAA Division II Central Arkansas 3-2 Tuesday night in Siloam Springs. Central Arkansas (4-5) controlled the tempo in the first four games, despite losing two of those to John Brown (8-2). The first four games were extremely close, with the Sugar Bears taking Games 1 and 3 30-25 and 30-27, and the Golden Eagles winning Games 2 and 4 30-26 and 30-28. In the Game 5, however, John Brown jumped out to an early 8-4 lead, and then continued the run to win15-4. Tati Silva served an ace on the last play of the game.
Silva led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 16 kills, and Elisa Mendieta was close behind with 15. Juliana Todescan made 54 assists, and Christine Wells recorded 31 digs. Wells also served four aces, and Silva tallied three, including the game-winner. Samantha Rogoff contributed five blocks.
Head coach Robyn Gordon expressed satisfaction after the game at having beaten Central Arkansas, an NCAA Division II team which will advance next season to NCAA Division I. “It was a game of minimal point differences,” she said, adding that small errors made a big impact for both teams throughout the match.
The Golden Eagles next match will be a rematch against the Sugar Bears, this time in Conway at 7:00 on Tuesday.
