Simonsen Leads Trio of Golden Eagles Named All-Conference
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (November 11, 2014) -- A trio of Golden Eagles, including a pair of freshman, have been named to the All-Sooner Athletic Conference second team, the conference office announced this week.
Eli Simonsen, a native of Klaksvik, Faroe Islands, was named to the second team after leading the Golden Eagles in assists (nine) and points (17). The junior midfielder posted a single-game season high of four points when he netted a pair of goals at Mid-America Christian (Okla.) on Oct. 28 in JBU’s 3-1 win. He also posted a season-best three assists in John Brown’s 3-0 win over Southwestern A.G. (Texas) on Oct. 23.
In his three-year career, Simonsen has posted 16 goals and 24 assists, totaling 56 points, the most of any Golden Eagle over that span. Additionally, he was named to the first team in 2012 before landing on the second team last season, his sophomore campaign.
Joining Simonsen on the second team are a pair of freshman including keeper Adam Holt and defenseman Douglas Oliveira.
Holt, a native of Tulsa, Okla., finished third in the conference with a 1.03 goals-against average in 17 games played. He also was able to save 51 of 68 shots sent his way over the course of the regular season to boast a .750 save percentage. Holt earned four shutouts on the season, including 1-0 blankings of then-No. 5 Oklahoma Wesleyan and then-No. 13 Benedictine (Kan.). During that stretch of the season, he accumulated three consecutive clean sheets which totaled 374:58 minutes of shutout soccer.
Oliveira, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, helped the Golden Eagle defense yield a mere 17 goals against in 16 games played. Despite six losses on the season, John Brown never dropped a game by more than a goal.
Oliveira, who scored a pair of goals this season including a game-winner, is the first Golden Eagle defenseman nominated to an All-Conference team since Chris Soenksen in 2012.
