Woman Fall short in Chickasha

CHICKASHA, OK (February 24, 2005) — The John Brown University Golden Eagles lost a second game of the season series to the USOA Lady Drovers on Thursday night, 64-63. The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 14-14 overall, and 6-11 in SAC play.

The Golden Eagles came out dominating, leading by 18 at one point in the first half, and taking a 42-28 edge to the halftime break. However in the second half it was the Drovers who dominated. USAO opened the half on a 23-8 run in the first 9 minutes. The game remained close from then on.

Lady Drover Crystal Merriweather hit a lay-up and was fouled with 1:19 remaining. Merriweather made the free throw to put the Lady Drovers up 64-63. The Golden Eagles got a stop with 12 seconds left and brought the ball up looking for a last second shot to win. However sophomore Jordyn West’s desperation three at the buzzer clanged just short off the front of the rim. It was the second time this season JBU lost to the Lady Drovers by one with the final possession.

The game featured four ties and seven lead changes. USAO guards Secret Stubblefield and Katie Sterling led the way for the Lady Drovers with 21 points each. Merriweather had 12 of her 14 points in the second half.

Forward Ashley Wettengel with 23 points paced the Golden Eagles, and leading scorer Kendra McCormick had 19 for JBU.

The Golden Eagles play next on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Northwestern Oklahoma State University.
