BETHANY, OK (February 12, 2005) - The John Brown University Golden Eagles came out on fire and then turned to ice. JBU dropped a 69-63 decision at Southern Nazarene University on Saturday night. The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 14-10 overall and 5-8 in the SAC.
JBU opened the first half with a 23-12 run sparked by 8 points from senior Pat Smits, and 9 points form junior Mike Garland. The Golden Eagles looked to be well on their way to a 6th SAC victory. However the Golden Eagles went cold the final 7 minutes of the half mustering just 7 more points to take a 30-25 lead to the break.
The Golden Eagles opened the second half cold as well, and had committed 10 team fouls with just 5 minutes gone by in the second half. SNU passed JBU in the first 10 minutes of the second half and never gave the lead back.
The Golden Eagles shot 32% from the field for the game, and just 26% from long distance. SNU mustered just 22% from three-point range, however they were able to shoot 41% from the field.
Brandon Cole led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 14 points, but shot just 2 of 13 from the field. Cole scored 9 of his 14 from the line and had 12 in the second half. Swingman Mike Garland added 12 for JBU.
SNU leading scorer, Mouhamado Diallo paced The Crimson Storm with 18 and Woury Diallo had 15.
The loss is a serious blow to the postseason hopes of the Golden Eagles. “We have to focus on the conference tournament before we think about the national tournament,” said coach John Sheehy. “We struggle when we struggle to get balanced scoring.”
The Golden Eagles entertain the 3rd place Oklahoma City Stars on Thursday at 8 p.m. in the Murray Sells Gymnasium.
