SHAWNEE, OK (January 24, 2005) - The Golden Eagles came out on fire and never cooled down. The Golden Eagles won their first conference road game, 80-71 over the Oklahoma Baptist University Bison. The win improves the Golden Eagles to 13-5 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
The Golden Eagles took the lead with 5 minutes into the game and never gave it back. The Golden Eagles went on a 24-8 run over the next 8 minutes to open up a 17-point advantage. The Bison chipped away at the lead to cut it to 36-28 at the half. The Golden Eagles shot 54% from the field in the first half.
The Bison opened the 2nd half strong and got within one, 44-43. The Golden Eagles stayed in front by three or more until the Bison made it 55-53. The Golden Eagles then finished the game on a 25-18 run.
Brandon Cole hit two big 3-pointers to open up an 8-point lead. Freshman guard Steve Briggs hit four crucial free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.
Brandon Cole led the Golden Eagles with 19 points. Four other Golden Eagle players also scored in double digits. The Golden Eagles shot 59% from the field for the game, and 57% from 3-point range.
“After the first loss in Texas, we made the decision to put the team in the hands of our seniors, and it’s worked,” said coach John Sheehy.
Justin Benson had 19 points off the bench to lead the Bison. Leading scorer Leonard Mosley had 15 before fouling out in the final minutes.
The Golden Eagles next play at St. Gregory’s University at 8 p.m. on Thursday night.
