JBU Women Get First SAC Win

Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 15, 2005) — PLAINVIEW, TX—The John Brown University Golden Eagles defeated the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens 61-52, for their first SAC victory this season. The win improves the Golden Eagles record to 9-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The Golden Eagles came out flat in the first half, falling behind 22-11 in the first 12 minutes. The Golden Eagles responded, closing the half on a 17-6 run to overcome their largest deficit of the game, sending the game to halftime tied at 28. The Golden Eagles opened the 2nd half strong and never looked back. JBU opened a 42-32 point lead with 11:29 to go in the game. Wayland responded with a 10-0 run to tie the game at 42. However JBU guard Lesli Fanning hit a 3-pointer with 6:50 to go, putting the Golden Eagles ahead for good. Forward Nancy Pierre’s putback with three minutes left opened up a nine-point lead and sealed the Golden Eagles first conference victory. “Nancy’s offensive rebound and put back was huge for us,” said Coach Jeff Soderquist. Ashley Wettengel led the Golden Eagle in scoring with 18 points and leading scorer Kendra McCormack had 13 points. Christa Condron had 11 points to pace Wayland and guard Stephanie Shaw had 10. The Golden Eagles next game is at 6p.m. Thursday when they welcome Northwestern Oklahoma State University to the Murray Sells Gymnasium.
