Women Lose Close Game in Texas

Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 14, 2005) — LUBBOCK, TX – The John Brown University Golden Eagle lost a 45-43 decision against the Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals Thursday night. The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 8-6 overall and 0-3 in conference.

The Golden Eagles shot just 22% from the field in the first half and scored what is likely a record low 12 points in the first half. The Golden Eagles were fortunate however, as the Lady Chaps were only able to muster 17 first half points while shooting 27% form the field in the first half.

The Golden Eagle faired much better in the second half, doubling their shooting percentage to 44% and scoring 31 points. John Brown finished the game shooting 33% from the field.

In a game that was hotly contested, and in which neither team led by more then six points, the Golden Eagles tied the game with 13 seconds remaining on a free throw from Ashley Wettengel. On the ensuing possession, The Lady Chaps drove the length of the court and found freshmen Ashley Hunter along the right baseline for a 15 foot jumper with .7 seconds remaining. The Lady Chaps deflected the Golden Eagle inbound pass as time expired to seal the two point victory.

After the game Golden Eagles head coach Jeff Soderquist said, “You can’t shoot 30% from the field and turn the ball over 27 times and expect to win.”

Casie Legg led the Lady Chaps with 10 points, and Lesli Fanning paced the Golden Eagles with 13.

The Golden Eagles play Saturday afternoon at 1p.m. at Wayland Baptist University.
