Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 3, 2005) - The John Brown women’s basketball team traveled to Monterey, California for the Monterey Bay Classic over the New Year’s weekend, and came away celebrating victories in both their games. The wins put the Golden Eagles at 8-3 for the season.
The women took on Fresno Pacific Friday afternoon. The Golden Eagles led 30-23 at halftime, and were able to hold on to the lead to win the game 58-54. Junior Kendra McCormick led JBU in scoring with 15. Sophomore Ashley Wettengel was close behind with 12. Wettengel led the team in rebounds with 12, getting a double-double for the game. Sophomore Leslie Fanning also contributed nine points with three treys.
McCormick threw in 18 points and pulled down 8 rebounds on Saturday to help lead her team to victory against Hartwick College. Fanning contributed 17, shooting 5 for 8 from behind the arc. Wettengel added nine rebounds and eight points. As a team, JBU pulled down 42 rebounds, gaining a large advantage over their opponent, with Hartwick only having 27 total rebounds.
The Golden Eagles open their conference play on Thursday facing Southern Nazarene on the campus of John Brown University. The women play at 6 p.m. and the men will follow at 8 p.m.
