JBU Women's Basketball Team Travels to Brazil

Siloam Springs, Ark (July 2, 2001) — -Nine members of the JBU Women’s basketball team, along with coaches Jeff Soderquist and John Sheehy, traveled to Goiania, Brazil, where they conducted basketball clinics, spoke in schools and churches, and played eight exhibition games.

Team members were in Brazil from May 24th to June 7th and worked with the mission organization Global Impact. Global Impact was conducting a crusade for Christ in Goiania, and the JBU basketball players worked to promote both the crusade and basketball in Brazil.

The team conducted four basketball clinics during their two-week stay in Brazil, and over 500 children attended the clinics. At the clinics, the team members not only had the opportunity to teach basketball, but also to tell about their relationships with Christ and to promote the crusade. In addition to conducting the clinics, the women had the opportunity to speak in three schools and several churches about Christ, basketball and America. The women also played eight exhibition games against all-star, military police academy, high school and men’s and women’s university teams. JBU’s record in these games was 5-3.

“This trip was a great experience for my team. I feel we gained more from the Brazilian people than we could have ever given them,” Coach Jeff Soderquist said. “For many of the women it was their first time to be out of the states. I can’t wait until we will be able to do this again.”
