JBU Appoints Assoc. Dean of Faculty Development

Siloam Springs, Ark (October 3, 2002) — The Office of Academic Affairs at JBU is pleased to announce that Dr. Cal Piston, professor of mathematics, has been appointed associate dean of faculty development.

As associate dean of faculty development, Dr. Piston will provide leadership for all faculty programs and faculty development initiatives at JBU. His areas of leadership will include The Institute for Learning Enhancement (TILE), faculty evaluations, Teagle Faculty Workshops, faculty mentoring, and faculty and staff development.

"Dr. Piston has helped guide this university through many challenges over the past two decades, and we look forward to his expanded leadership in the years to come," said Dr. Ed Ericson, vice president for academic affairs.

Dr. Piston has been a professor of mathematics at John Brown University since 1982. He has served as chair of the division of natural science since 1998, and he served as chair of the faculty development committee from 1994-1998. Dr. Piston has also been the director of The Institute for Learning Enhancement (TILE) since its inception at 1999. In addition to his work at JBU, Dr. Piston has published multiple papers and received numerous grants in math education.

Dr. Piston received his undergraduate and graduate education in mathematics at the University of California- Davis before earning his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Arkansas. He is a member of the Mathematical Association of America, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Association of Christians in Mathematical Science, and the POD Network (faculty development organization).

Dr. Piston and his wife, Stephanie, have four children and live in Siloam Springs, where Dr. Piston is an elder at Siloam Springs Bible Church.
