Program seeks to educate diabetics
(June 17, 2004) — (Little Rock-AP) -- Governor Huckabee says a new program that combines state and private efforts for diabetes patients who receive Medicaid assistance helps two ways. He says the program will improve patients' quality of life and save taxpayer dollars by reducing the need for some medical care. The Arkansas Diabetes Control Program is getting funding by grants from Eli Lilly and Company. The program has added 12 diabetes education centers across the state. About one-thousand Medicaid patients use the free counseling now. Officials hope to put an education center in every Arkansas county, adding to the 33 centers now operating. The program is part of the state's Healthy Arkansas initiative.
