Siloam Springs, Ark. (April 13, 2004) - The John Brown University Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) Team has won again! The team competed against six other SIFE teams from Alabama, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee and Arkansas at the regional competition Friday, April 2 in Memphis, Tenn. The JBU SIFE team presented the many projects they have been working on throughout the past year. The projects included, World Trade Expo, English as a Second Language, and an Ethics Seminar. The team also presented their most recent project, Santa Cruz, in which the team traveled to work with the village of Santa Cruz in Guatemala during spring break. Their objective was to enhance the small community through economic development. The team took a census in efforts to develop a micro-economic system in addition to conducting research that will aid in the development of a town bakery, bicycle repair shop and chicken bank. Part of the team also worked with a small co-op of indigenous women in Antigua, Guatemala on the process of importing their handmade goods to the U.S. “I could not have been more proud of the team’s performance,” Amber Squires, SIFE Sam Walton Fellow said. “It was their best performance that I have seen yet. After they were done presenting, and the questions and answer time had begun, it was silent. I would gather it was due to the stellar performance that left the judges speechless!” The judges look at the projects to see how well the team covered the four pillars of SIFE: teaching free markets in a global economy, helping entrepreneurs succeed, developing personal success skills, and teaching social responsibility and ethics. The judges also evaluate the team’s annual report that explains in detail all of the projects the team has competed in the past year, as well as assessing the team’s presentation. One judge remarked, “Unbelievable…absolutely world-class! Rivaled anything I’ve ever seen in academia or practical work experience!” The JBU and the College of the Ozarks SIFE teams will advance to the SIFE National Competition, May 23-25 in Kansas City. The winner of the national competition will advance to the SIFE World Cup in Barcelona, Spain in September. JBU’s SIFE team won third in the nation at the 2003 national competition.
