Federal judge: Richardson can sue U of A

(March 31, 2004) - (Little Rock-AP) -- A federal judge had disagreed with some arguments by the University of Arkansas, which had asked to be released from a lawsuit brought by fired basketball coach Nolan Richardson. Richardson was fired two years ago and alleges the university discriminated against him because he is black and outspoken. U-S District Judge William R- Wilson Junior said the university can't stop Richardson from suing because he agreed to not sue in a contract. Wilson said the university can't ask for employees to give up rights. Wilson also said the fact that Richardson earned millions at the university has no bearing in the trial. The judge did agree with the university that Richardson can't claim incidents that happened before Richardson's most recent contract.
