(March 15, 2004) - (Cane Hill-AP) -- Archaeologists in northwest Arkansas are working to unravel a mystery more than a century old on a wooded slope in Cane Hill. Jerry Hilliard, an archaeologist with the Arkansas Archaeological Survey, has been excavating the ruins of a family home built on a ranch before 1840. Hilliard and a team of volunteers have been digging out the foundations of a detached kitchen that belonged to the home, and they will continue digging until Thursday. The public can view the site or participate. Ranch owner T-A. Sampson wanted to build a polo field on the ranch and stumbled upon an old cemetery two years ago. When Sampson called archaeologists out to examine the cemetery, they found the ruins of the home.
