Consolidation suit stalled?

(March 12, 2004) — (Little Rock-AP) -- A threatened lawsuit challenging forced school consolidation appears doubtful. Jimmy Cunningham, who is trying to recruit plaintiff school districts, says he may not have enough support or money to sue. He says he needs about twice the 15 districts that are on board. Cunningham, superintendent of the 295-student Plainview-Rover District, says the lack of support is unfortunate. A new state law requires school districts with fewer than 350 students to consolidate their administrations with another district. The law was passed during a contentious special legislative session, at the heart of which was the issue of consolidation. Most of the 57 school districts with fewer than 350 students are deciding in the next few days which district to join. A few have already decided to consolidate with or become annexed into other districts.
