JBU Women’s Basketball Reaps SAC Honors
Siloam Springs, Ark. (March 3, 2004) — For the second year in a row, a Golden Eagle women’s basketball player has been named Freshman of the Year in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Ashley Wettengel, a 5’10 forward from Bentonville, Arkansas is the choice for the 2003-04 season. In addition to Wettengel being named Freshman of the Year, she has also been named to the third team all-conference list. Kendra McCormick (last year’s Freshman of the Year) has been selected to the Sooner Athletic Conference first team. In addition to the players, Head Coach Jeff Soderquist has been named Coach of the Year for the SAC.
Wettengel and McCormick led the Golden Eagles to a record season. The 2003-04 edition of Golden Eagle women’s basketball has won more games than any other JBU team in school history. Their 21 wins thus far this year surpasses the 20 wins by the 1984-85 team.
McCormick leads the team in scoring with a 14.3 point per game average while shooting 56.3% from the field, good enough for 8th in the NAIA. McCormick also rebounds at the rate of 5.03 boards per game, shoots 34.5% from beyond the 3-point arc and 75.4% from the charity stripe.
Wettengel leads JBU in rebounding with 5.45 rebounds per game and is second on the scoring list with 12.0 points per game as she shoots 42.7% from the floor. Wettengel has a shooting percentage of 76.8% from the free throw line and 33.3% from three-point range.
Upon receiving word of the SAC honors, Coach Soderquist had these comments. “For Kendra to be selected to the first team in the SAC is a great honor. Our conference is by far the strongest overall in the country and to be recognized this way shows the respect the coaches have for Kendra and her talent. Ashley has really stepped in as a freshman and responded extremely well to the level of play and pressure we face in the conference. I am very proud of these two players and the honor they have brought to the team as a whole.” In regard to being selected Coach of the Year, Soderquist said, “it is the players on the team who have bought into our style of play and responded with good execution that allows me to receive such an honor. I have to give credit for this honor to our team.”
