State sales tax goes up today
(March 1, 2004) — (Little Rock-AP) -- Arkansas sales taxes go up nearly a penny on the dollar to six cents today. The extra money will fund court-mandated improvements to the state's public school system. The increase is expected raise an estimated 338 million dollars a year. Arkansas' sales tax is lower than that of Mississippi and Tennessee. Both states levy seven cents on the dollar. But the rates in other surrounding states are lower - four-and-a-half cents in Oklahoma, four-point-225 in Missouri, and four cents in Louisiana.
