State Democratic leader: Huckabee posturing
(February 26, 2004) — (Little Rock-AP) -- The chairman of Arkansas' Democratic Party says Governor Huckabee is trying to make political points by announcing his support for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. Ron Oliver says Huckabee, a Republican, is engaging in election-year politics by publicly backing President Bush's proposal for the amendment. Oliver says Huckabee is engaging in a "silly" attempt to make the Democrats look bad. He also criticized the governor for an earlier comment about the economy. Huckabee said American consumer American consumers' purchasing habits are responsible for a loss of jobs during Bush's administration. Oliver says he personally opposes gay marriage but the issue isn't more important than the economy or Iraq.
