Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 19, 2004) - Led by Brandon Cole’s 25 points and after trailing 31-29 at the half, John Brown University (20-7, 8-6) came back with a strong offensive effort in the second period to defeat Sooner Athletic Conference foe Southern Nazarene University (19-8, 6-8) 68-57. Cole hit 7 of 13 from the three-point range and 4 of 5 free throws for his 25 points.
In the second half, Cole hit 3 straight treys in a little over one minute to help JBU increase its 4 point lead to 13 with 11:34 remaining in the game. The Crimson Storm’s Andre Murray answered with 6 points to cut the lead to 7 with 9:51 left. Back to back threes by Adam Workman and Cole at the 3:00 minute mark put JBU back up by 11 that proved to be the winning margin.
Batiste Haywood and Manuel Narvaez scored 16 points each to top the scorers for the Crimson Storm. Reyjavick De Gracia pulled down 9 rebounds and Cole brought down 8 boards to lead JBU in rebounding.
“Overall we were very effective on the defensive end of the court allowing them to shoot only 36% from the field and held them to 0 of 9 from the three-point range,” winning Coach John Sheehy commented after the victory. “Our post players did a good job defending Manuel Narvaez, the third leading scorer in the Sooner Conference. We did a lot of the things we needed to do to win, but we still need to convert free throws down the stretch to be able to win the close contests.”
JBU plays again at home on Saturday against Oklahoma Christian University at 8:00 pm.
