JBU Women Beat Wayland Baptist 75-61
Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 16, 2002) — The John Brown University women’s basketball team won back-to-back Sooner Athletic Conference games for the first time this year by beating Wayland Baptist University at home on Saturday. The Golden Eagles won 75-61 after coming off a win at home on Thursday against Lubbock Christian University.
Leading the way for JBU on Saturday was senior forward Sophie Voordeckers. Voordeckers, coming off of the bench for the Golden Eagles, led the team in scoring with 17 points and in rebounds grabbing 10. Voordeckers, who averages nine points and six rebounds a game, has been instrumental in the last two victories, scoring 17 in both contests and missing a double-double against LCU by just one rebound.
Senior post Katie Elliot contributed 10 points and eight rebounds in the victory against WBU, while junior guard Lara Keeling and sophomore guard Aubree Schwartz scored 13 and 12 points respectively.
WBU’s leading scorer was sophomore guard Cassie Birkenfeld with 30 points.
JBU is now 12-14 on the season, with a 4-11 conference record. WBU falls to 6-10 in the conference.
The Golden Eagles have one home game left in the season, and it will be a tough match-up. JBU plays Oklahoma Baptist University on Monday. OBU is ranked 10th in the NAIA, and fourth in the SAC with a 9-5 conference record.
