Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 16, 2004) - John Brown University basketball teams return to the friendly confines of Murray Sells Athletic Center this week for games against Southern Nazarene on Thursday night and Oklahoma Christian on Saturday night. With both the men and women’s teams in third place ties in the Sooner Athletic Conference, these two games take on primary importance for the league standings and for invitations to the national tournament.
Despite suffering losses in 4 of the last 5 games, the Golden Eagle men are still deadlocked with two other SAC foes in third place, 3 games back of Oklahoma Baptist and Lubbock Christian who have 10-3 SAC records. JBU, Wayland Baptist and Oklahoma City all have identical 7-6 conference records. Both Southern Nazarene and Oklahoma Christian are one game back with 6-7 records in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
Hector’s Brandon Cole leads the JBU men in scoring with 15.0 points per game and senior Abdiel Mendieta follows close behind with 14.3. Leading the Golden Eagles in rebounding is Reyjavick De Gracia with 7.27 rebounds per game.
On the women’s side, JBU and Wayland Baptist are both setting at 9-5 in third place in the SAC behind league leaders Southern Nazarene (13-0) and Oklahoma City (12-1), the No. 1 and 2 teams in the NAIA.
Two athletes from Northwest Arkansas are leading the 20-7 Golden Eagle women. Siloam Springs’ Kendra McCormick tops the scoring list with 14.3 points per game while shooting 56.6 from the field and pulls down rebounds at the rate of 4.96 per game. Ashley Wettengel of Bentonville leads the team in rebounds with 5.08 per games and is second in scoring to McCormick with 12.0 points per game.
