Robert Norwood is Dean of Undergraduate Studies and a Professor of Engineering at John Brown University. Dr. Norwood has served as Dean of Undergraduate Studies since 2009 where he provides leadership for development and enhancement of undergraduate education at John Brown University. He is responsible for providing vision, curricular focus, and policy development for all undergraduate programs. In addition, he oversees and implements the faculty evaluation program.
Since 2007, Dr. Norwood has also served as the Director of Assessment. In this role, he coordinates the institutional and program specific assessment processes. He also chairs the Assessment Committee which reviews all outcome assessment at John Brown University, recommends a master assessment plan, shares comprehensive results with the university, and recommends appropriate action based upon that information. As Director of Assessment, Dr. Norwood also serves as the institution’s accreditation liaison with the Higher Learning Commission. He helped coordinate the development of the institution’s current strategic plan and led the most recent reaccreditation efforts with the Higher Learning Commission where he was the primary author and editor of the self-study report.
Prior to his position as Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Dr. Norwood served as Chair of the Division of Engineering and Construction Management at John Brown University where he was responsible for three departments: Computer Science, Construction Management, and Engineering. As division chair, he led the engineering program’s accreditation efforts with ABET, taking the program through a successful accreditation cycle. Dr. Norwood has taught engineering and computer science at John Brown University since 1998. Before joining John Brown University, he worked at Intel, Sun Microsystems, and Silicon Graphics.
Dr. Norwood is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and he serves the IEEE as an ABET program evaluator. He is also undergoing training to become a peer reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. He is currently participating in the Senior Leadership Academy program cosponsored by the Council of Independent Colleges and the American Academic Leadership Institute.
Dr. Norwood is a graduate of Stanford University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He continued at Stanford and earned a master’s and Ph.D. in electrical engineering with a Ph.D. minor in computer science.
