Samaritan’s Purse- Operation Christmas Child

Christmas- the time of year when we celebrate the greatest gift ever given: Jesus Christ! Operation Christmas Child is an opportunity to give of your time, energy and resources to share the Gift of Jesus to the children of the world! Watch for times and locations of the annual Wrapping Party and come wrap your shoebox full of love while fellowshipping with friends and celebrating the season. Pick up a brochure for details.

Wing Hook-Up Program

The wing hook-up program allows faculty and staff members to adopt a residence hall floor/suite or townhouse. In this program, faculty and staff have students over to their homes for food and fun.

Welcome Dinner/ County Fair

The Student Development staff hosts a grand affair the first week of school out on the Quad to encourage people to get out and have fun! There are inflatable games and other carnival attractions, such as a dunk tank, cotton candy maker, and square dancing. The entire JBU community is invited to this cook-out and all-around good time.

Mayfield Fun Run

They call it the Freshman 15, but if you want to call it gone, start exercising today by joining us for the Mayfield Fun Run. You may run, walk, bike, hike or crawl it as long as you are having fun! Healthy snacks will be provided immediately following the run! Everyone is welcome! Sweet t-shirts included!

Brother-Sister Halls

A men’s floor and women’s hall are paired together for activities throughout the year to provide healthy interaction with members of the opposite sex. Some may play sand volleyball, learn how to change a tire, or even decorate each other’s living area! Get to know your siblings.

J. Alvin Christmas Party

The biggest holiday celebration on campus! A variety of festive activities are hosted in the J. Alvin atrium for all students: from making cookies to sliding down a giant slide from the third floor!

Self-Breast Examine

Each year a growing number of women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Unfortunately for some, the cancer has progressed beyond treatable stages before being detected. The good news is that if identified early enough, many women can survive breast cancer and live long healthy lives. Come learn the way to do this life-saving technique.

Monthly Topical Programming

Sex in September

This is a great opportunity to talk about sex in real life situations. There is a Q and A sessions with a local doctor and with several young married couples.

Substance Abuse in October

A movie documentary about our approach as Christians to those around us who are struggling with substance abuse. We have several student testimonies as well as faculty and staff who share their views and experiences in dealing with the issue. There is a panel discussion after the presentation.

Current Events Discussion

Over the course of every semester events take place around our world that deserves reflection and comment. In order to keep our students aware of our world and cause them to look at it critically the Residence Life office will periodically, as events in our world take place, put together panel discussions or other forms of programming to address these issues.

Body Image- “Killing Us Softly” – video and discussion

This is a video that will be shown in the residence halls dealing with self and body image of women. It illustrates how the media distorts the Biblical, God designed image of women. There will be a discussion following the video talking about the issues that relate to a poor self image.

Celebrating Spiritual Holidays

This will be done in many different venues, from campus wide, to individual residence halls, to individual floors/suites/wings/houses. A few of the spiritual holidays celebrated may include Passover, Good Friday, Christmas, Easter, Lent, Advent, etc. For example, your living area may have a Passover meal and learn what is involved in the meal and why the symbolism within the meal is still very important for us today.

True Love in Real Life

This is your opportunity to hear the love stories on several JBU faculty and staff couples! Come prepared to laugh and maybe cry as these wise ones share their stories of first dates, courtship and marriage. There will be a time for questions. Let’s start learning about love somewhere other than Hollywood.

Missions/Missionaries In Residence

The MIRs will come to talk in the residence halls, sharing their life stories and talking about what they do on the mission field and why God has called them to be missionaries overseas. They will have a time to answer questions. There will also be opportunity for people in the hall to talk about their own experiences on missions trips over the summer and what God has been teaching them through this. As a part of this program it is our hope that students better understand our world, the people who live around the world, and how they can better connect with those people to impact our world for Christ.

Spiritual Expression Through The Arts
There will be a coffee house for students, along with a time to display or show how they express their faith through their art. This may include songs and music of all kinds, worship dance, artwork, photography, food, poetry reading, stories, etc. There will be opportunity for people to talk about how and why they express themselves spiritually through their artwork.

International Meals

Throughout the year there will be times for people from other countries to cook and share the kinds of food that they enjoy eating from their country. In doing this, they can share with us a little part of their home, and allow us to try new things as they learn to enjoy cuisine from around the world. Through this program and others like it we hope that student can learn to better respect and appreciate each other’s differences.

Testicular Cancer Examination

Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men between the ages of 15 and 35. When detected early, it is among the easiest cancers to cure. Come to this program to find out how to perform a simple self-examination to check for this cancer.

CPR

Everybody on campus will have an opportunity to be certified in CPR. Learning a few simple procedures could save someone’s life, and getting certified will only take a couple of hours. If you are planning to be a lifeguard this summer, you must be certified in CPR.

Basic First Aid

Come learn basic first-aid. First-aid skills can be helpful in all areas of life, especially if you are planning to spend any amount of time in the wilderness. You never know exactly when you will need to respond to a health-crisis situation. Becoming certified in basic first-aid is something you must do if you are planning to be a lifeguard or work with groups in the wilderness.

Prayer Vigil

There are many facets for worship and a very powerful, practical one is prayer! Please sign up for a time slot to unite with your friends as we pray around the clock (for 24 hours) to worship and lay our requests before the King. We’ll kick the vigil off and wrap it up with a time of community worship!

Star Gazing

The heavens declare the glory of God…Psalm 19:1 Bundle up to see the glory of God as we gaze at the heavens! Learn more about the creation around us and perhaps catch a glimpse of the Creator! Besides… star gazing can be terribly romantic! Bring a friend. We’ll warm up with hot cocoa immediately following.
