John Brown University seeks a full-time choral conductor beginning August 1, 2017. Responsibilities include conducting all choral ensembles (does include travel); teaching courses in conducting and choral techniques; mentoring student conductors; choral/vocal recruiting for the Department of Music & Theatre. A secondary area of responsibility is teaching applied voice (baritone, tenor). Other teaching duties/responsibilities will be added as determined by the needs of the department and candidate’s expertise. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to academic advising of students, participation in departmental governance, performance at appropriate public events, and service on university committees.
The Department of Music and Theatre resides within the Division of Communication and Fine Arts and offers courses leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Music Education. These courses provide a well-rounded education for those wishing to enter the music profession as artists, teachers, supervisors, church musicians, and musicians in other fields. The program in music is closely allied with work in Bible, liberal arts, and technological departments, providing students majoring outside the department of music the opportunity to study music as a minor or as electives.
An earned PhD or DMA in Choral Conducting is preferred as well as significant and successful experience at the college level in both conducting and teaching as demonstrated by student achievement and ensemble growth/performance. Background in Music Education/Teacher Education with a current public school teaching license is helpful. Successful experience in teaching applied voice (baritone, tenor) demonstrated through student achievement at NATS or other competitions. Other suggested teaching areas include music history, theory, aural skills, and technology. Demonstrated interest in and commitment to a multi-faceted music program within the context of a program of liberal arts education is necessary. Effective teaching experience in higher education, evidence of scholarly potential, and a commitment to Christian higher education are essential.
