Dr. Will Goertzen
Assistant Professor of Engineering
Ph.D., Iowa State University
M.S., The University of Tulsa
B.E., John Brown University
Dr. Will Goertzen received his B.E. with Mechanical Concentration from John Brown University in 2003, his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tulsa in 2005, and his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Iowa State University in 2007. Both his master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation dealt with thermosetting polymer-matrix composite materials, with emphasis on high-temperature applications. He has been involved in academic and industrial research related to experimental characterization of the thermal, mechanical, and viscoelastic properties of these materials for applications in the oil and gas, geothermal energy, process, and aerospace industries. Dr. Goertzen came to John Brown University after spending five years at Schlumberger Technology Corporation in Lawrence, Kansas. While at Schlumberger, he had the opportunity to perform materials research that has contributed to the development of new products for thermal recovery of heavy oil and geothermal energy applications. He and his wife, Abi, have two children, Hannah and Isaac. Dr. Goertzen enjoys spending time with his family, listening to music, working on cars, and playing golf or tennis. Dr. Goertzen thoroughly enjoys learning about God’s creation and how engineers can use that knowledge and their creativity to develop technical solutions for problems in today’s society.
