MFA Application Requirements
Application Requirements for MFA
Priority deadline for fall 2015 admission admission into JBU's MFA in Visual Communication Design program is June 1, 2015. Admission is selective, and applicants must meet all criteria for admission into JBU's Graduate School to be considered for admission into the MFA program.
To be considered for admission into the MFA in Visual Communication Design program, please submit the following:
- Online application for admission (includes three references)
- Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended
- Digital portfolio
- Letter of intent
- Resume or curriculum vitae
The Digital (PDF) Portfolio should include:
- Visual Artifacts
- 15 pieces of clearly labeled work in a single PDF file (include a project and concept description for each artifact)
- Three (3) short films with a description of your role in the project
- Three (3) Written Artifacts, which may include:
- Innovative Research
- Design Thinking or Critical Thinking Articles
- Creative or Design Briefs
- Creative Writing Stories
- Artist or Philosophy Statement
The Letter of Intent should be two pages in length and answer the following:
- Give us a short background of your visual communication, creative, design thinking, or collaborative design experience.
- Collaborative design is defined as two or more creative problem solvers working together with people or organizations to serve in the pursuit of shared goals and effective solutions in a collective determination to reach common objectives. Collaborative design may be presented through visual communication artifacts, innovative design processes, system design, information design, as well as other delivery avenues.
- Design thinking is defined as “a human-centered approach to innovation that draws from the designers experience to integrate the needs of people, the possibilities of technology, and the requirements for success,” according to Tim Brown, President and CEO of IDEO. “Thinking like a designer can transform the way organizations develop products, services, processes, and strategy. Design thinking is a deeply human process that taps into abilities we all have but get overlooked by more conventional problem-solving practices. It relies on our ability to be intuitive, to recognize patterns, to construct ideas that are emotionally meaningful as well as functional, and to express ourselves through means beyond words or symbols.” —IDEO

- How do you see your work – with non-profits and/or ministry-based organizations – impact and benefit people in your community, the nation, and/or the world?
- If you do not have experience or a background in design, describe your rationale for why you think you would be a good fit for JBU’s MFA in Visual Communication Design program.
