In June of 2011, the Southern California Military Academy Funded Scholarship and the Southern California Military Academy Endowed Scholarship were combined to form the George and Marie Hurte Endowed Scholarship.

George Hurte passed away on January 13, 2011 at the age of 83. A veteran of the US Navy, he was best known by cadets at the Southern California Military Academy as "Major" Hurte, where he served as a teacher, principal, superintendent, and headmaster for the better part of four decades. He is remembered as a generous man with a great sense of humor and for the impact he had on many young lives, instilling "Character Before Career." He was also a trustee of his alma mater John Brown University in Arkansas and a champion of Christian higher education and of "Head, Heart, and Hand." He was twice president of the east Long Beach Kiwanis Club. He lived as he taught; loving God, family, country and community.
