Calvin Piston is Dean of Institutional Effectiveness and a Professor of Professor of Mathematics at John Brown University. Dr. Norwood has served in this position Studies since 2009 when the Office of Institutional Effectiveness was founded. The Office of Institutional Effectiveness exists to provide the JBU community with reliable, clear, timely, and useful information to support institutional planning and confident decision making, and to coordinate reporting of data to external and internal requests.
Prior to his position as Dean of Institutional Effectiveness, Dr. Piston served as Chair of the Division of Natural Science at John Brown University from 1999 to 2003 and from 2006 to 2009 where he provided leadership for four departments: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. From 2002 through 2006. He served as Associate Dean of Faculty Development and was the founding director of The Institute for Learning Enhancement at JBU
Dr. Piston started at JBU in 1982, teaching in the Department of Mathematics. From 1990 through 1997, he administered a number of grants from the Arkansas Department of Higher Education related to the improvement of mathematics and science education in the state.
Dr. Piston is a graduate of the University of California, Davis where he earned his bachelor’s degree and master’s degrees in mathematics. He continued his studies at the University of Arkansas where he earned a Ph.D. in mathematics with research in the study of Banach lattices.
He has four grown children, two of whom graduated from JBU, and is married to Stephanie. He is a member of Siloam Springs Bible Church where he serves as an elder.
