Professor of Music
M.M., Wichita State University
B.A., Tabor College
Paul Smith is in his 29th year of teaching at JBU. A native Californian, Mr. Smith loves small town life in Siloam Springs and loves being a professor of Voice/Choral music. Paul credits much of his career to the amazing mentors that shaped his early life in music. A little known fact is that as a young man he dreamed of becoming a concert pianist and thus took piano from age 7 to 21 culminating in a college recital. Along with that goal he was always encouraged to be involved in choral singing. As the years went by, it became abundantly clear that his future was going to be tilted almost completely towards degrees in vocal performance. Although his first musical love is still piano, he loves his life in vocal music. As a “former” pianist he lives vicariously through wonderful pianists like our own Dr. Paul Whitley. He has enjoyed his career as a professional soloist, conductor and voice instructor for 35 years.
Mr. Smith is married to his college sweetheart. Janice is a full time Physician Assistant working at the Veterans Administration in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Together they have four wonderful boys, Nathaniel 37, married and living in China. Tim 33, attending Trinity Seminary in Chicago, Aaron 31, married and working hard as the head master of a Christian school in Costa Rica, and Christian almost 20, attending JBU. They enjoy two grandchildren - Sammy and Sara.
Paul loves the world of sports and has been an avid golfer for 58 years.
High on his list is the opportunity the Lord has granted him to help shape the talents and abilities of college students and enjoys great camaraderie with his students and fellow colleagues!
