Assistant Professor of Engineering
Ph.D., Iowa State University
Ph.D., B.S., Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Nanjing, China
Dr. Jin Xu joined the Engineering faculty in August of 2013. Dr. Xu received his B.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA) in 2002 and was awarded a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from NUAA in March of 2007. His senior project was on designing, drawing, and stress calculation of helicopter tail rotor. His PhD research concerned mathematical modeling and computer simulation of aerodynamics for maneuvering rotor. After briefly working as a technical consultant in an aerospace software development company based in Beijing, Dr. Xu came to America in 2007 and studied acoustics. He studied high-intensity focused ultrasound as a potential non-invasive tumor-treatment modality, and received his second PhD in Mechanical Engineering (ME) from Iowa State University (ISU) in August of 2011. For his postdoctoral training, Dr. Xu stayed at ISU, and worked on efficiency improvement for biofuel production by using ultrasound to lyse microalgae. He also studied aerodynamics and used Fluent to improve wind-energy capture efficiency. In addition, his latest research involves microfluidics with application in forensics science. Dr. Xu has published twelve journal articles and presented seven conference abstracts. Dr. Xu cherishes the opportunities of working with students to enhance integration of faith and learning. In his leisure time, Dr. Xu enjoys spending time with his wife, Hui, and their preschooler Stephanie, reading the Scripture, and attending Bible study. He also hikes and plays soccer as a hobby.
