"You can do this!" Words of encouragement to our new students

To the new Organizational Management students,
This week, over 60 of you began your JBU career on your way to finishing your degree. Your experiences and stories varied, and I know that each of your stories will enrich what you will learn together.
For some incoming students, my involvement with you has been brief, with maybe just a phone call and a few emails over the past few weeks. For others, I have been working with you for months or even years to explore options and execute a plan to earn the credit you needed for admission into JBU.
In every case, it has been a privilege for me to work alongside you. I am already looking forward to watching you graduate in December 2015... It is going to be here before you know it!
I have been busy this week helping some of you navigate those last few steps into your first night of class. I wanted to take a moment to share a few words of encouragement for the days which lay ahead, so here are three things to keep in mind:
- You can do this. It is the one thing each of you probably heard me say at least once. The OM program was designed with the busy adult student in mind. Each of you have already faced challenges in life, whether personal or professional, promotions or pink slips. Each challenge has given you insight to navigate and advance forward in life. The things you will learn in class will give you a chance to draw from those experiences to develop meaningful skills and knowledge.
- Engage. Terms like “team building” and “collaboration” are considered keys to success in business today. Successful teams are often defined by how each player commits his/her effort to the overall team goal. In the OM program, your cohort represents a team who wants to finish their degrees and learn some valuable lessons along the way. In order to serve your cohort best, be present in class, complete assignments on time, and be prepared to contribute to the discussion in class.
- Let us help. Having questions and seeking answers is the root of any educational experience, so don’t be afraid to ask questions. You have a team at JBU who wants to see you successfully complete your degree. Your professors, academic advisor, and other staff are here to support you on your way to finishing your degree, so let us know how we can help.
I am proud of each of you and the work you have accomplished up to this point in your academic career. I believe the Lord has a plan for you and brought you to JBU for a purpose. I am excited to see how your cohort will grow together and who you will become through the experience.
My final words are from the Apostle Paul as he wrote in Thessalonians 5:11-13: “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.”
Grace and Peace,
Senior Admissions Counselor
