It’s Time to Step Out of the Boat!
Friday, September 20, 2013
Has there been a time in your life when Jesus called you to “step out of the boat?” Maybe when He called you to finish your degree?
Close to 20 years ago, there was an 18-year-old girl who heard God’s voice for the first time. It wasn’t a lighted billboard sign or a cloud formation in the sky, but a “still, small voice” that was peaceful, consistent and directional. She had been a Christian for some time, but wasn’t sure of her next step on where to attend college - in state or out of state, state college or private. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, she finally knew where to go to college - she sprouted wings and flew gracefully into the next phase of her life by walking in faith.
College was everything she expected it to be and a whole lot more. She gained academic knowledge from all of the challenging courses, made more friends than she had ever had before and above all, she grew spiritually. Not only by attending church on Sunday mornings, but being completely submerged in the Christian college culture. This was, indeed, why she was led to attend a college like this.
I am product of a Christian college - a person who was called to a Christian university and was completely changed by the experience. As I now reflect on this journey, I did not want a small piece of the experience, but I wanted it all.
As I took my step out of the boat, of course, there were storms that came. Yet, in times that it became dark and cloudy, I kept looking to the Person who was constant, who loved me and never got tired of me. The one thing Jesus stated in Matthew 14:22-36 was a simple, command; “Come.” Taking on a challenge, like finishing your degree, begins with placing one foot at a time out of the boat and keeping your eyes on Jesus! Enjoy the ENTIRE degree completion experience by allowing Jesus to change you as a student and as a person.
