JBU Wins Swim Meet
Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 12, 2003) — John Brown University swimming and diving team competed in the Rhodes College Quad Meet this past weekend and came away as the champions in both the men’s and women’s divisions. For the men, JBU tallied 154 points to outdistance Hendrix with 149, Rhodes with 98 and Lambuth University with 49 points. On the women’s side, JBU scored 170 points coming in ahead of Hendrix with 113, Lambuth with 106 and Rhodes with 86 points.
Canda Cottrill bettered the qualifying standard for the NAIA national meet in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:24.73. This marks the 17th time a relay team or individual has equaled or surpassed the qualifying mark for national competition.
Individually, the men captured first in eight events while the women were winning eleven events. Winners for the men included the 200 Medley Relay team of Luke Williams, Nik Hook, Josh Hughes and Marshall Gooding, Hook in the 100 and 200 Freestyle, Williams in the 100 and 200 Backstroke, Dusty Woodson in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke, and Hughes in the 200 Butterfly. Women’s event winners for JBU were the 200 Medley Relay and 200 Freestyle Relay teams of Mariah Rose, Stephanie Burrell, Lindsey Smith and Kathleen Kubricht, Rose in the 200 Freestyle, Kubricht in the 100 Backstroke and 100 Butterfly, Burrell in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke, Smith in the 50 and 100 Freestyle, and Canda Cottrill in the 200 Backstroke and 500 freestyle.
Coach Brandi Harris commented on the meet by saying, “Our times are continuing to improve and we are ahead of where we were last year with national qualifying times. I am pleased with the progress we have made to this point.”
The Golden Eagles will enter the water again for competition when they travel to Arkadelphia, Arkansas for the Henderson State Invitational on November 21 and 22.
