Swimming Gearing Up for Final Home Meet
Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 21, 2008) — Less than a week after the announcement that their program is coming to an end, the JBU women’s swimming team is calling for fan support during their final home meet.
“It’s bitter sweet,” said senior Gabrielle McCully. “But I’m excited about Saturday because hopefully this will be the biggest crowd we’ve ever had.”
Head coach Shawn Toenyes stated that it’s been extremely difficult finding teams that want to travel to JBU to compete, making nearly every competition an away meet.
“We can’t find an athletic director from another school that just wants to send their women’s team down,” said Toenyes. “Because we don’t have a men’s team, they don’t think it’s worthwhile.”
The six-member team knows it was a tough decision for the university but feels the correct decision was made.
“We were ready for this and we are glad JBU made the decision that they made,” said junior Gabe Ives.
The final home meet will take place this upcoming Saturday at 3 p.m. against Missouri State. And the members of the team would like all JBU fans to show up and cheer them on for this final event.
“Come out and support us,” said sophomore Miranda Neuberger. “We need all the help we can get.”
“Give us a great goodbye and farewell,” added Ives.
