Hall of Fame Guidelines

The John Brown University Athletics Hall of Fame’s basic mission is to recognize players, coaches, friends, or teams who have made exceptional contributions to the achievement and prestige of the John Brown University athletics program.

The individuals or teams recognized have been outstanding athletic performers, outstanding coaches, or friends, whose identification with the athletics program has been unique, and who exemplify the ideals and standards of John Brown University.

Dr. John E. Brown Jr.
Former JBU president who reinstated varsity athletics in 1958 with men’s basketball

Sam Starkey
First men’s basketball coach at JBU

Dr. Ed Renfrow
Former cross country coach, professor of education, and sports information director, 1981-2004

Mike Castleman
Former tri-sport athlete in baseball, basketball, and track and field, 1960-64
Hit the first homerun for JBU varsity baseball in 1963

Roy Englebrecht
Manager, trainer, and statistician for men’s basketball from 1963-67
Also served as home umpire for all JBU home baseball games

Mark Latham
Reinstated the men’s swimming program in 1984 and created a new program for women

Steve Matchell
Outstanding men’s basketball player from 1974-1978
Has scored over 2000 points in his career
