1. Determine the amount needed. We strongly encourage students to take out the maximum available in federal student loans before applying for an alternative student loan because it will be less expensive to them over the life of the loan.  You may contact Megan Riddle (MRiddle@jbu.edu) for information on any remaining federal student aid eligibility.
2. Select a lender. Below is a list of preferred lenders of alternative loans along with their phone numbers and web addresses. We encourage you to visit all of the web sites to review the requirements and fee structures of each type of loan. These lenders were chosen on the basis of the customer service they offer to students and their dedication to helping students pay for college. Important: Some lenders require that monthly interest payments be made while you are in school, which means you will pay less interest over the life of the loan.  But you will need to be prepared to make those monthly payments once your loan has been paid into your account.  Contact Megan Riddle (MRiddle@jbu.edu) for more information on which lenders have that requirement.
3. Apply. Applications may be completed by phone, by mail or on-line, depending on your lender choice. Be sure to give complete information and return all forms with original signatures as soon as possible, when required.
4. Contact the Financial Aid Office. Notify the Financial Aid Office that you have chosen and applied for an alternative loan. Your lender will also be in contact with the Financial Aid Office to obtain certification of the loan. Once the loan is certified, funds will be sent to the school to be applied to your student account. Remember, the Financial Aid Office can only certify a loan amount no greater than the cost of education less all other financial aid.
