Karen Talkington:

Karen is a senior Sports Medicine major this year at JBU. This past summer Karen was a caretaker for an 82-year-old woman with Alzheimer's disease. She also taught ESL (English as a second language) one night a week. Her interest in Sports Medicine was sparked due to her own experiences in having to go through therapy as an athlete in high school. She is going into her 5th year now as a student-trainer here at JBU, and works with the women's volleyball team. She has also been doing her practicum hours with a physical therapy clinic. Her future involves going on to Physical Therapy School, and eventually starting a career as a physical therapist. Of her work here at JBU, she states, "I like helping athletes return to their sport as soon as possible."

Heidi Holthus:

Heidi is a junior at JBU, and is an Exercise Studies major. For the past two summers Heidi has worked as a therapy assistant in a Chiropractic office. Her interest in this area is directly a result of her interest in the body and wanting to help other people maintain optimum health and wellness. She is currently doing a Field Experience, leading a low-impact exercise class for elderly people. She also teaches Yoga classes here at JBU, and is continually learning more about the functioning of the human body. Her goals for the future will span some avenue of the natural health field, and possibly continuing on with Yoga instruction. Of her major here at JBU she states, "I am learning so much about the human body in the Exercise Studies major. I am also learning how to apply that information to my career path. JBU has been a great experience and I am enjoying every minute of it."

Corporate and Community Wellness graduate Shelly Smith traveled to Panama to help on a construction site at a Methodist Church. In addition to the construction work, Smith's team also played with, read to and handed out candy to 20 Panamanian children each afternoon. Of the experience, Shelly states, "My heart is always blessed by being in another culture and experiencing life as they do. We were able to do things in a different way and share the love of Jesus through a different language. God has taught me so much lately about how his plan is best for my life."

My time within the Health and Sport division at JBU afforded me the opportunity to develop to my full potential in college. The small class size allowed for a great deal of individualized attention, which helped me to personalize my degree plan towards chasing the dream I had in life. The staff within the department is full of character, integrity, and a true sense of caring about each student that walks through the classroom door. Choosing the right college and the right program can greatly improve your chances at success in your career.
