JBU Engineering Program

Overview

The engineering program at JBU has been offering degrees since 1935 and currently offers a Bachelor of Science in Engineering with concentrations in Electrical/Computer and Mechanical. The program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (http://www.abet.org). Our program has three particular strengths: a strong foundation in both electrical and mechanical engineering concepts, an emphasis on design and hands-on learning, and personal interaction between the faculty and students.

The structure of our program gives all of the engineering students a strong foundation in both electrical and mechanical engineering concepts. All students take the same engineering courses for the first five semesters. The final three semesters are spent concentrating on either the electrical or mechanical side. This strong foundation prepares students to communicate effectively on multi-disciplinary teams and to more fully understand how complex systems work together.

Our engineering program has design and laboratory experiences throughout the curriculum, but there are three courses in particular that demonstrate our design emphasis. Engineering Concepts and Design is a freshman course where students are first introduced to the process of design. Design Laboratory is a junior course in which students, working in multi-disciplinary teams, conceive a consumer product, design the product, and build a prototype. Engineering Design I and II is the senior capstone course where students work individually, under the guidance of company and faculty mentors, on real-life projects sponsored by local companies.

The engineering faculty is dedicated to teaching students not just how to be good engineers, but how to be good Christian engineers. Small class sizes, lots of office hours, an open-door policy, and friendly atmosphere are some aspects that contribute to the personal interaction, relationships, and friendships that develop. The faculty cares about the students and wants to see them succeed.
