Division of Communication and Fine Arts
Department of Art and Design
The John Brown University Department of Art and Design offers the Bachelor of Science Degree (B.S.) with majors in Graphic Design and in Illustration.
Professionals in the fields of Graphic Design and Illustration solve communication problems as a vital part of our information-oriented society. From interactive CD and video animation to publication design and editorial illustration, from television and video graphics to corporate logos and advertising, illustrators and graphic designers are impacting the future.
The two programs of the Department, built around a common 21-hour core,
are structured to equip students with the intellectual and practical
abilities required of a visual communications professional. Development
of conceptual thinking skills, aesthetic awareness, problem solving,
and technical skills are emphasized. Advanced computer laboratories
ensure opportunities for both illustrators and designers to become proficient
in the software and
hardware of their trade.
Striving to model the integration of their Christian faith with their discipline, the faculty stress the practice of visual communication enhanced by concern for ethical implications, responsibility toward the natural environment, and a Christian world view.
In terms of a student ’s time, energy, and talent, the curricula
are demanding. Our goal is to graduate professionals prepared for
a career in their field. The areas in which graduates may find employment
are diverse, encompassing Multi-media, Advertising, Design Studios,
Publishing, Television, Industry, Printing, and Freelance work.
