Don Soderquist addressed a combined group from John Brown University and Universidad Francisco Marroquin on the topic of ethical leadership. The group consisted of SIFE officers and graduate students from John Brown University and a virtual audience of MBA students from the Escuela de Negocios, Universidad Francisco Marroquin, Guatemala City. Virtual attendees represented several countries. Don spoke of the importance of values in leadership and challenged the group to make good choices that demonstrate integrity and care for others. The event was hosted by Universidad Francisco in Guatemala and sponsored by the JBU Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Team.


Joe Walenciak traveled to Olivet Nazarene University on January 31, 2005 to lead an accreditation site visit team on behalf of the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE).
Joe Walenciak will travel to Guatemala from February 10-13, 2005, to do some preliminary work on two SIFE projects: installation of stoves in the Santa Cruz area, and development of the Coop Ixel in San Antonio Aguas Calientes. The JBU SIFE Team will follow up with both projects over spring break.


John Brown University SIFE held a meeting of its Business Advisory Board on Thursday evening, January 27, in the Soderquist Board Room on the campus of JBU. Sixteen members of the BAB were in attendance. The BAB received a full presentation of the mission, strategy, and projects of the JBU SIFE team. Discussion included an evaluation of the direction and performance of JBU SIFE, and ways of engaging the BAB more effectively.


John D. Copeland (Business), James Barnes and special guest Dr.Sandra Van Thiel recently discussed the ethics of giving video games containing violence and graphic sexual material to children. The discussion aired during the December 12, 2004 broadcast of "Ethics Matters" heard on KUOA 1290 AM. Dr. Van Thiel explained the harmful impact such games have on very young children and teengers. Although a majority of parents worry about buying violent games for their children, they still continue to do so in record numbers, especially during the Christmas season. Too many parents remain unaware of the mature and adult labels on the games they purchase or simply give in to their children's' demands. "Ethics Matters" will take a three week break for the Christmas And New Year holidays and so that James Barnes can get married! The program will return on January 9, 2005 at its usual 2:00 to 3:00 pm time.


Joe Walenciak, Chairman of the Division of Business at JBU, attended the first National SIFE Faculty Advisory Board meeting held in Chicago on November 17 and 18. The board consisted of 13 members selected from a list of about 100 candidates from the 800+ list of Sam M. Walton Faculty Fellows nationwide.

The next meeting will be in May at the National SIFE Competition in Kansas City.


John D. Copeland (Business) addressed members of the Little Rock Rotary Club on December 7, 2004 during the Club's weekly luncheon. Dr.Copeland spoke on "The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 and Its Impact on Directors, Officers and Liability Insurers". Approximately 300 business leaders attended the event.

Copeland (Business) addressed Islam's Impact on U.S.higher education and Saudi Arabia's financial support of Mideast Study Centers on the December 5,2004 radio broadcast of "Ethics Matters" heard on KUOA 1290 A.M. During the upcoming December 12, 2004 broadcast, Dr.Copeland and co-host James Barnes will discuss Christmas gifts for children and the impact of violent video games. JBU's Sandra Van Thiel will be a special guest and she will add her expertise to the discussion.


John D. Copeland (Division of Business) was elected to the four-person Executive Committee of the Ernest A. Kallman Executive Fellows on November 9th. The Executive Committee is the organization's governing body. Kallman Executive Fellows are chosen from the more than 1100 members of the Ethics Officers Association (EOA). Membership in the honors society is limited to 30 ethics officers and is based on their recognition as leaders in the field of business ethics. Fellows are nominated through the Center for Business Ethics, Bentley College, Waltham,Massachusetts. Election to the fellowship requires a unanimous vote of the Kallman Executive Fellows' membership. Bentley College is a leader in business ethics education and the training of professional ethics officers. The EOA is headquarter at Bentley College.

Professor John D. Copeland's comments on corporate social responsibility are now available in LEADERSHIP WIRED, vol.7, no.20. LEADERSHIP WIRED is an on-line publication of Dr. John C. Maxwell. JBU Professor Participates EOA Conference

Professor John D. Copeland participated in the Ethics Officer Association's Annual Conference in Scottsdale, AZ, October 19-22, 2004. The EOA Conference is the largest multi-industry meeting of corporate ethics and compliance officers. Over 600 attendees participated in more that 50 sessions addressing the latest issues in corporate governance and to exchange innovative ideas and methods for implementing successful ethics, compliance and business conduct programs. The EOA is the professional association exclusively for managers of ethics, compliance and business programs. The EOA has over 1,000 members.
