Scholarship Guidelines
H. Y. Benedict Fellowships and Alfred H. Nolle Scholarships
- Each chapter may nominate only one candidate for each award.
- The faculty sponsor of the chapter must submit the nominations.
- Only complete nominations will receive consideration. Required
materials include the following:
- The official color-coded nomination form completed, signed by the sponsor, and included with the entry.
- A letter of application from the student outlining his/her plans for study and detailing his/her extracurricular activities---maximum length of two pages, double-spaced.
-
One copy of a paper or other appropriate work in his/her major.
(A non-written submission, i.e., an original painting, music score, film, slides, video, cassette tape recording, or other medium should be submitted with a written explanation demonstrating an understanding of the theoretical and historical significance of the submission.)This is the most important aspect of the application; it must be clear, well-designed, and correctly expressed. If the paper represents a cooperative project, both nominee and the faculty director of the project must specifically delineate the nominee's contribution; if this is not done, the entry will be disqualified.
The paper should be without covers or binders, grade or comments, and printed on one side only. Scientific papers require an abstract.
- One letter of recommendation/evaluation from a faculty member in the field represented by the student's scholarly paper or project (item 3 above); this letter must address the significance of the scholarly work
- A self-addressed post card for verification of arrival of materials.
- Failure to adhere strictly to any of the above-listed requirements
may result in disqualification.
- Nomination materials must be mailed to guarantee postmark no
later than February 22, to the Alpha Chi National Office, Harding
University Box 12249, Searcy, AR 72149-0001. Enclose all materials
in a single packet.
- Fellowship and Scholarship recipients and alternates must submit, within two weeks of notification, a recent passport-size photo for publicity purposes.
BENEDICT FELLOWSHIPS
A nominee must be enrolled as an undergraduate and graduate with
the baccalaureate degree during the school year in which application
is made. He/she must identify the graduate or professional school
at which he/she intends to study during the following fall. To receive
the stipend, a nominee chosen as a Benedict Fellow must be enrolled*
for the following fall semester as a full time student in graduate
or professional study.
NOLLE SCHOLARSHIPS
A nominee must have one year of undergraduate study remaining following
the school year in which application is made. To receive the stipend,
a nominee chosen as a Nolle Scholar must be enrolled* for the following
fall semester as a full-time student in undergraduate study toward
the baccalaureate degree.
* If a recipient does not enroll
or receives a large grant that prohibits additional financial aid, the
stipend will go to the first alternate, etc.
Contact the honors office for
the appropriate color-coded nomination form. Since each chapter may
only nominate one person for each award, there may be competition at
the chapter level to decide whose application becomes JBU's nominee.
